A recent article by Alisa Cunningham, the Director of Research for the Institute for Higher Education Policy in Washington, D.C., comments on the societal benefits associated with higher education. She comments in her article, “The Broader Societal Benefits of Higher Education,” that society benefits in one way by getting more tax money from the larger salaries that people with a PhD make. Ms Cunningham’s article focuses on studies that show that a person with a higher education such a PhD, is more likely to have a higher income and better health. They are more likely to rely less on government social programs and are less likely to be incarcerated. She also comments that people with higher educations are more likely to engage in civic activities that help the society. With more online PhD degrees available every day, perhaps the government should begin offering scholarships for higher education. It could only benefit society as a whole.
